BioNTech SE is said to have invested 410 million euros to buy an entire company specializing in AI development. The aim: to drive forward the company's own AI-based drug research. AI systems have long been performing a wide variety of tasks around the world. They process tedious routine tasks, learn independently, prevent errors and discover valuable, complex information that humans would not have found at all or only after years of work.
AI is also being used in medtech. The MDR, IVDR and the new EU AI Act provide a tight regulatory framework here. A look at the current FDA statistics shows that of the approximately 700 AIs that have now been certified, image-based AIs are used almost exclusively. Why is that? Are there no other economically viable applications in the industry? Or is an entire industry currently oversleeping its future?
