"Do we need machine learning in practice?"

Dortmund, 20th September 2018

Do we need machine learning in practice? And what is the path of Data Science & Analytics in industry - from the idea to the implementation?

These and other questions were discussed by infoteam Software AG together with the CPS.HUB NRW during the event "Do we need machine learning in practice?" on September 20th with around 50 members of the CPS.HUB network at the infoteam branch in Dortmund. Artificial intelligence technologies, including machine learning, are on the advance. Nevertheless, many players are having a hard time putting these technologies into practice, even though a study by IDG Research confirms that the majority of companies rank machine learning among their top 5 priorities. Speaker Dr. Stefan Michaelis from the TU Dortmund confirmed that this makes sense with his lecture: "AI technologies have come to stay. At the same time, he also provided information on how the implementation of AI technologies can be successful in one's own company.

David Schmelter from the Fraunhofer Institute for Design Technology Mechatronics IEM presented a practical example from a company. Under the title "Effective beer brewing thanks to intrapreneurship - analytics service development at a classic mechanical engineering company", he sketched out how innovative, digital services can be developed for the evaluation of process data and what the introduction process can look like using a project.

Charalampos Theocharidis from infoteam Software AG gave a clear answer to the central question of the event "Do we need machine learning in practice?": "Yes, but...". In his eyes, machine learning is a powerful tool, but it is not worth much without human knowledge. "Machine learning is often overestimated, we need it in practice, but we also need the specific expertise of the employees in the area so that the results of machine learning can really be used," explained Theocharidis. Using some of infoteam's best practices, he illustrated how the use of smart technologies coupled with user knowledge can offer added value in companies.
